Career day is an opportunity to discover what field you are interested in for the future. We cold call places of interest to shadow a professional. Drove to the Pacific Beach Veterinary Clinic, where I shadowed a temporary guest doctor because the main doctor was absent. I learned the way they file the appointments and how they organize diagnosis's. I assume that a normal day at the clinic would have meant that the day would have been more full of activity than the day I was there. only three appointments took place that day. The workers at the clinic seemed to have a great friendship together because they constantly cracked jokes and there wasn't really any regulation of the things they did. I think they all knew what was important. Most of the time they are cleaning supplies and fixing things around the office if they don't have a current patient. there was one man who handled most of the appointments with the doctor, but helped out anyone who needed help. The receptionist would work hold down dogs and everyone would work together. I don't really think anything that I have learned in high school would help with this job exempt for being organized, having social skills, and taking and organizing notes. The doctor, the get the job she has, had to get a bachelors degree then specialize in a area and get a doctorate. What I took from this experience is that I defiantly don't want to be a veterinarian. I don't think it agrees with me, although it was fun that day still. Next year I would be really interested in working with my neighbor Boback, who works at Qualcom coding. I think it would be really interesting to see the work environment and the difference between the veterinary clinic and it.
Sadly I wasn't able to take photos of the experience. When I interviewed the professional I asked whether the assistant wanted to be a lab assistant. He explained to me that he thought he would be working at a habitat conservation center, but it was more reasonable to him to stay near where he already lived. Another question I asked was what degrees did he need to work there. He told me that he went through four years of undergrad and a year of medical school. he was currently a resident at the clinic. The last question I asked him was how the schedule worked and how you know who comes next in the day. They showed me the computerized system that color coded the types of appointments and the notes on the side for them.
During the phone call I didn't have a script because I just called my neighbor to check if could shadow in his clinic. I called him, explained career day, and asked him if I could shadow on may 19. He said yes.
