We Happened reflection
We Happened I expected this project to be like one of my middle school projects, interesting in ways but not that impactful. I love my old teachers, but the things we did weren’t too challenging. However, I was shocked by the workload and amount of hard work and preparation needed now. I partnered up with Sophia Morrison, Matthew Arucan, Joseph Guyse, Leah Maxwell, and Jeremy Ong to tackle the problem of the lack of food justice. We planned to create an activity with some interested elementary school kids to plant foods. They would be able to take care of the plants themselves and strengthen their bonds with growing fresh healthy food. Throughout this project I learned the importance of team collaboration when creating our mission statement, studying as a group for our final presentation, and presenting our final presentation.
When we created our mission statement I learned more about group collaboration because we all put in our own input that we either agreed upon or worked with until it fit our thoughts. Our mission statement was, to give youth back the right to grow and cook healthy food in a way that is affordable, environmentally healthy, socially impactful, and most importantly hands on and interactive. We wanted to inspire this generation to care about not only where food comes from but also the impact our agricultural and culinary habits have in the world. Without this input we wouldn’t have been able to create a statement that we all agreed to. It took of all of our five different brains and thoughts to put it together. We put together the biggest presentation I had ever taken part in and I learned more while preparing.
We finally finished the final presentation with half a week to spare, and we spent most of our time trying to lock down who would say what, what to include, and things to include last minute. from this I learned how to tell the difference between who is really willing to put themselves out there and was confident in what they learned and the people that would rather stick in their comfort zone. The people that would volunteer to take the slide no one wanted, as well as the extra slide were willing to show their knowledge in our subject. Yet I still pushed my group to even out the work load and helped them with things that they couldn’t understand I took four slides for myself and I was ready to explain what our group was going to do as an action for the project. This lead to a much harder topic the presentation.
It may not seem so, but there is teamwork in the final presentation too. When a group member is talking you can add more information or explain what you think to make the argument stronger. During my presentation, my group member added to my presentation of our campaigns even though it wasn’t her slide and she made our point stronger and better looking. There is always room for improvement and when you work with others the product is very well rounded out.
I believe that collaboration with your group is very important while as a group working on our thesis, studying, and presenting. As a group if we work together well we can create something far greater than when we work alone. This is important because with everyone being able to speak their minds and put themselves into our work we will have a greater community for everyone.
